  6.                           HOW TO INSTALL YOUR SOFTWARE
  7.  
  8. Now that you have installed the WD1006V-MC1/R hardware, you need to install the 
  9. software that tells your computer how to use the hardware.
  10.  
  11. Installation Summary
  12.  
  13. The software installation consists of doing the four procedures listed below.
  14.  
  15.      Configure Computer
  16.      
  17.      Low Level Format

  19.            using Reference Diskette
  20.      
  21.      Partition Hard Disk
  22.      
  23.            using FDISK utility program
  24.      
  25.      High Level Format
  26.      
  27.            using FORMAT utility program

  30. You may find it easier to install the WD1006V-MC1/R software, if you first look 
  31. over the complete set of instructions and locate any materials that you are 
  32. going to use.
  33.  
  34. After you complete the low level format on your hard disk drive, you need to 
  35. partition your drive and do a high level format before you can use your hard 
  36. disk for the first time. The programs: FDISK and FORMAT accomplish these 
  37. functions.
  38.  
  39. The low level format program is done with either the IBM Reference Diskette or 
  40. the diskette supplied by your system manufacturer. FDISK and FORMAT are located 
  41. on either the DOS diskette or the OS/2 installation diskette.
  42.  
  43. The following sections give detailed instructions on how to perform these 
  44. procedures. These instructions are documented for an IBM PS/2 computer. If you 
  45. have a compatible computer, your menu screens may not match those documented 
  46. here. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for their compatible 
  47. computer (i.e., use their Reference Diskette).
  48.

  50. CONFIGURE COMPUTER
  51. **************************************************************************
  52.  
  53. 1.  With the power to the computer off, turn the power on and 
  54.     immediately insert the Reference Diskette into drive A.
  55.  
  56.     One of the following occurs:
  57.

  67.            165 Error
  68.            Other Error Codes (2 beeps)
  69.            IBM Logo
  70.  
  71. You get the 165 Error if the system configuration has been changed (i.e., 
  72. installed board in new expansion slot). However, you get the IBM logo if you 
  73. place the new board in the same slot. Other errors accompanied by 2 beeps 
  74. indicate the Reference Diskette can correct the problem.
  75.  
  76. Follow the instructions 1A or 1B for your system. If you first get the IBM logo 
  77. and then the 165 error occurs, go to the instructions for the 165 error.
  78.  
  79. Instructions for IBM PS/2 computer only. Your screens may be different.
  80.  
  81. 1A.  The 165 Error message appears:
  82.  
  83.      Adapter Configuration Error - 00165........................Page 1 of 2

  85.      The computer's internal self-tests found an option adapter that is 
  86.      different from the option adapters indicated in the computer's 
  87.      configuration.
  88.      
  89.      This error occurs if option adapters are added, removed, or are not 
  90.      working properly.
  91.      
  92.      If you have added or removed an adapter, run automatic configuration. To 
  93.      view or change the results of automatic configuration, go to the Main 
  94.      Menu of this diskette and select "Set configuration."
  95.

  201. REMEMBER: Select a drive type with the same or less cylinders,  the same or 
  202. less heads, and the same or lower write pre-comp cylinder.

  222. 6.   If anything changed or there was a 165 Error, follow the 
  223.      instructions on the screen. When you see the screen message, "Press 
  224.      ENTER to restart the computer and activate the changes," follow the 
  225.      instructions to restart the system.

  227.      Skip step 7 and instead go to the "Low Level Format" section.<ES>

  229. 7.   If no errors occurred,
  230.  
  231.      Press <ESC> to return to the Set Configuration menu.

  236.                                      CAUTION
  237.  
  238.      Do NOT start the low level format until you have a backup copy of the 
  239.      information on your hard disk. This warning usually applies to previously 
  240.      used hard disks.
  241.      
  242.      When you have a new hard disk, you usually do not have information to 
  243.      backup except in the case where your dealer installs some applications 
  244.      software on your unit.

  266. LOW LEVEL FORMAT

  269. Before you start the low level format, you need to decide what to do with the 
  270. data (if any) on your hard disk drive unit.
  271.  
  272. If you are installing a brand new (never used) hard disk drive unit, skip the 
  273. next few paragraphs and go to step 1 on the next page.
  274.  
  275. If you are installing a hard disk drive unit which was previously in an AT 
  276. computer with a Western Digital controller, you have two options:
  277.  
  278.      keep the files on the AT hard disk drive unit
  279.  
  280.      erase all files on the AT hard disk drive unit
  281.  
  282. If you decide to keep all the files, do not continue with the instructions in 
  283. this chapter. The format will destroy all information on the hard disk.
  284.  
  285. If you decide to erase all the files, continue with the low level format.
  286.

  435. The installation is slightly different and depends on whether you install DOS 
  436. or OS/2.

  438.      If you are installing the OS/2 Operating system, go to section

  441.      If you are installing the DOS Operating system, go to section 
  442.      "Partition Drive."

  464. OS/2 OPERATING SYSTEM

  467. Before you can use a new hard disk, the hard disk must be partitioned with 
  468. FDISK and have a high level format done with FORMAT. However, these steps are 
  469. done automatically when you install OS/2. Therefore, you do not have to run 
  470. these programs separately, UNLESS OS/2 is already installed on your computer 
  471. system and you are now adding a second fixed hard disk drive.
  472.  
  473.      If this is your first hard disk, install OS/2. Then go to the next 
  474.      chapter.
  475.      
  476.      If this is your second hard disk, and OS/2 is already installed, 
  477.      see the Appendix.

  481. OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS

  484. Before you can use a new hard disk, the hard disk must be partitioned and have 
  485. a high level format done. How these functions are accomplished depends on your 
  486. operating system.

  488. Look at the operating system installation manual for instructions on how to 
  489. partition your hard disk and how to do a high level format.
  490.  
  491. After you complete the disk partition and high level format, go to the next 
  492. chapter.
  493.

  495. PARTITION DRIVE (DOS)
  496. **************************************************************************
  497.  
  498. A partition divides the drive into units and prepares your hard disk for use 
  499. with an operating system, such as MS-DOS.* You can select one partition which 
  500. takes up your entire disk or several partitions, each occupying a portion of 
  501. the disk. Each unit can have its own operating system.
  502.  
  503. To partition your hard disk with DOS, follow the instructions below.
  504.  
  505. 1.   With the power to the computer off, turn the power on and 
  506.      immediately  insert a DOS diskette into drive A.
  507.  
  508. 2.   Use FDISK to create a partition
  509.  
  510.      To use the FDISK utility and partition your drive, first 
  511.      make sure that the diskette with FDISK is in drive A.
  512.  
  513.      At the A prompt,

  535. HIGH LEVEL FORMAT (DOS)

  538. As the final step to the software installation, you need to use the FORMAT 
  539. utility, which prepares the hard disk to accept files.
  540.  
  541. FORMAT Switch "/S"
  542.  
  543. FORMAT allows you to set certain "switches" which control various aspects of 
  544. the procedure. The /s switch copies the operating system from the diskette in 
  545. drive A to the newly formatted disk. This is a simple way to get your operating 
  546.  
  547. system onto your hard disk. 
  548.  
  549. To use the FORMAT utility and load the operating system onto your newly 
  550. installed hard disk drive, follow the steps below.
  551.  
  552. 1.   Make sure that the DOS diskette with FORMAT is in drive A.
  553.  
  554. 2.   Simultaneously press <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> keys.
  555.  
  556. 3.   At the A prompt
  557.  
  558.      Type: FORMAT C:/S
  559.  
  560.      Press <Enter>
  561.  
  562.      Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process. 
  563.      See your operating system manual for details. 
  564.  
  565. At this point your hard disk is initialized and the system can read DOS from 
  566. your hard disk, if you only have one partition.
  567.  
  568. High Level Format Second Drive (DOS)
  569.  
  570. If you partitioned your drive into more than one partition, you must format 
  571. each logical drive. 
  572.  
  573. After you format drive C, repeat the above steps to format drive D, except
  574.  
  575. At the A prompt,

  598.                          HOW TO CHECK YOUR INSTALLATION

  600. After you completed the hardware installation, software installation, and run 
  601. the FDISK and FORMAT C:/S utilities, you are ready to start using your system.
  602.  
  603. Start System From Hard Disk

  605. You are ready to start your system using your newly installed hard disk drive 
  606. and WD1006V-MC1/R board. 
  607.  
  608. Remember: Remove the diskette from drive A or else your system will use the 
  609. operating system on drive A.
  610.  
  611. To start the system
  612.  
  613. 1.   Simultaneously press <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> keys.
  614.  
  615. 2.   The system should respond, several screens may flash, and finally the C 
  616.      prompt will appear.
  617.  
  618. You may have to enter the date and time, before the C prompt appears. This 
  619. depends on how your system is set.

  621. Note: AN ESDI DRIVE WILL ALWAYS BE DRIVE C

  623. Installation Complete

  625. You are now done. The next time you start your system you can start 
  626. from the hard disk.

  663.                              HOW TO HANDLE PROBLEMS
  664.  
  665. If you had a problem with the system, first re-read the instructions to be sure 
  666. that you followed them correctly. Check that you typed information EXACTLY as 
  667. instructed.
  668.  
  669. Repeat the procedure a second time to verify that you get the same error, then 
  670. check the next section, "If You Have a Problem."
  671.  
  672. If You Have a Problem
  673.  
  674. First check your physical installation. Look for cables and connections that 
  675. are loose or reversed, a computer power supply that is overloaded, or an 
  676. incorrectly jumpered hard disk drive.
  677.  
  678. This section lists some common problems and possible solutions to try if you 
  679. have problems after you install your controller.
  680.  
  681. PROBLEM:   "Adapter Configuration Error - 00165" or Error Codes, 162, 
  682.            163, or 166.
  683.  
  684. SOLUTION:  The system configuration has changed. Use the Reference Diskette 
  685.            to set the new configuration. See Chapter 4.
  686.  
  687. PROBLEM:   Winchester activity LED always on.
  688.  
  689. SOLUTION:  Check cable connections. Try to reverse or replace cables. 
  690.            Also possibly the drive malfunctioned.
  691.  
  692. PROBLEM:   "Drive Not Ready" or 1780 Error Code.
  693.  
  694. SOLUTION:  Cables reversed, bad cables, or drive malfunction. Check cable 
  695.            connections and drive.
  696.  
  697. PROBLEM:   "Hard disk verification failed" or Error Code 1790.
  698.  
  699. SOLUTION:  Either the drive type (in the system CMOS memory) violates 
  700.            the drive's physical parameters or the drive does not have a 
  701.            readable low level format. Repeat the low level format procedure. 
  702.            See Chapter 4. Also drive select jumper on drive could be incorrect
  703.            (see Chapter 2), or cable backwards, i.e., Pins 1 & 34 switched or
  704.             connector cables J2 & J3 switched.
  705.  
  706. PROBLEM:   A drive rated for 50MB completes the low level format, but 
  707.            the system only formats 10MB.
  708.  
  709. SOLUTION:  Used incorrect ST506 drive type in low level format. Recheck 
  710.            Table 2-3 and select drive with a better match to the number of
  711.            cylinders and heads on your drive. Repeat the low level format.
  712.

  728. PROBLEM:   Program appears to hang at the start of the low level format. 
  729.            (Only a problem for drive types that have a defect map.) See Table 
  730.            2-3 on page 2-8.
  731.  
  732. SOLUTION:  Controller is trying to read the defect map on your new drive(ST506
  733.            only). Since the drive is unformatted, the defect information is
  734.            not available. Press <<ESC>> when error messages occur.  The 
  735.            software will eventually format the new drive. Be patient. This may
  736.            take 10 or 20 minutes before the format begins. See Appendix page 
  737.            A-8.
  738.  
  739. PROBLEM:   None of the suggestions seem to help.
  740.  
  741. SOLUTION:  Call  your  dealer.
  742.  
  743.                                     APPENDIX
  744.  
  745. **************************************************************************
  746. INSTALL A SECOND DRIVE ON AN EXISTING CONTROLLER
  747. **************************************************************************
  748.  
  749. This section tells you how to install a second fixed hard disk drive on an 
  750. existing WD1006V-MC1/R controller board. You do not have to remove the existing 
  751. controller board, but you may have to remove the fixed hard disk so that you 
  752. can remove the termination resistor. (This depends on the location of the fixed 
  753. disk and the termination resistor.)
  754.  
  755. Do not attempt to install your hardware unless you have set the hard disk drive 
  756. configuration as explained starting on page 2-13.
  757.  
  758. The installation requires you to remove the cover from your computer. See your 
  759. PS/2 manual for exact instructions on how to remove the cover.
  760.  
  761. You need a wide control cable in a daisy chain configuration and you need to 
  762. connect another 20-pin data cable.
  763.  
  764. 1.   Turn your computer power switch to OFF.
  765.  
  766. 2.   Use a screwdriver to loosen the cover screws. Then remove 
  767.      the computer cover so that you can see the expansion slots.
  768.  
  769. 3.   Place the new hard disk drive unit into the computer case 
  770.      and attach per the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  771.  
  772. 4.   Look and see which expansion slot has the WD1006V-MC1/R board.
  773.  
  774. You may have to leave the drive case loose to connect the cables. Look and 
  775. determine whether to tighten the connections from the position of the cable 
  776. connectors.

  794. 5.   Check if your existing 34-pin wide control cable is a daisy 
  795.      chain cable. A daisy chain cable has 3 connectors. If the cable is 
  796.      not a daisy chain cable, then remove the 34-pin wide control cable 
  797.      from the WD1006V-MC1/R board and the existing hard disk drive unit.
  798.  
  799.      Leave the 20-pin cable attached to both the drive and the 
  800.      controller board.
  801.  
  802. 6.   Connect cables to new hard disk drive unit. Follow steps 
  803.      A, B, and C.
  804.  
  805.      Use a daisy chain cable. Connect the middle connector to

  929. NOTES ON DRIVE TABLES

  932. Several drives types in Table 2-3 contain defect maps. However, these drive 
  933. types are specifically for the IBM manufactured drives that have a defect list 
  934. on the maximum cylinder + 1. When you select one of these drive types, the IBM 
  935. Reference Diskette attempts to read this defect list before starting the 
  936. format. The IBM Reference Diskette attempts to read the defect list to retrieve 
  937.  
  938. the bad sector information.
  939.  
  940. If the defect list is unreadable (the WD1006V-MC1/R cannot read the IBM 
  941. formatted defect list in the drive table) there can be a delay of up to 20 
  942. minutes before the formatting will begin. This may also happen when you select 
  943. these drive types for use with non IBM drives that do not have a defect list 
  944. placed on the drive by the manufacturer.
  945.  
  946. If the drive does not have a defect list placed on it by the drive 
  947. manufacturer, then you should enter the defects using commercially available 
  948. software. (Contact your dealer.) The drive manufacturer usually attaches a 
  949. print out of the defects directly to the drive.
  950.  
  951. When the drive defects are not entered or are unavailable, an error free drive 
  952. over long term use cannot be guaranteed. Although the surface analysis 
  953. performed by the Reference Diskette does an adequate job at uncovering defects, 
  954.  
  955. it may not catch all of the defects that would have been identified by the 
  956. drive manufacturer. Defects undetected during the surface analysis may grow 
  957. over time, eventually becoming hard errors. This would typically only occur 
  958. under conditions of long term heavy use.
